DESCRIPTION OF INSTITUTE

Cooper teacher leaders/coaches are offering two professional development opportunities at The John Cooper School in The Woodlands, TX the week of July 17, 2023.

The three-day Beginner Institute focuses on providing participants with the structures of the workshop model and the tools to successfully implement both the reading and writing components. The two-day Advanced Institute is geared towards educators with 4+ years of experience using the balanced literacy framework and/or have attended The John Cooper School Summer Institute in the past. 

Beginner Institute: July 17-19, 2023
Cost of 3-Day Beginner Institute: $525 (includes lunch daily)

Participants will be divided into K-2nd and 3rd-5th grade strands. Middle School participants are also welcome and will join the 3rd-5th grade strand.  This institute is geared towards educators who have 0-3 years experience with the balanced literacy framework or have attended The John Cooper School Summer Institute in the past. 

Reading Workshop topics to be studied include:
  • Read-Aloud/Shared reading
  • Mini-lessons
  • Independent Reading
  • Classroom Libraries
  • Guided reading and/or strategy groups
  • Conferencing using reading toolkits
  • Assessment
Writing Workshop topics to be studied include:
  • Genres of writing and their components
  • On-Demand writing for pre-assessment
  • Mini-lessons
  • Independent Writing
  • Strategy groups
  • Conferencing using writing toolkits
  • Assessment
Advanced Institute*: July 20-21, 2023                                                                             
Cost of 2-Day Advanced Institute: $350 (Includes lunch daily)

This institute is geared towards educators who have 4+ years experience using the balanced literacy framework and/or have attended The John Cooper School Summer Institute in the past.
*Please note: An application will be required to join the advanced institute.

  • Thin-Slicing: Using Pre/Post Assessments to lead teaching
  • Creating and Utilizing Toolkits
  • Deep dive into reading levels
  • Creating a culture of opinion writing
  • Rebalancing Balanced Literacy
3-5 topics to be studied include:
  • Thin-slicing: Using Pre/Post Assessment to lead teaching
  • Going Beyond the RDT Conference
  • Creating and Utilizing Toolkits
  • Using Video-Alouds
  • Rubric building for Reading and Writing

Institute Details
