Senior Wins TMEA 6A All-State Band Four Years in a Row
Ian Hou a Resounding Success
Meet Ian Hou, a remarkable French horn player whose musical journey has harmonized with success as he clinched a coveted spot in the TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association) 6A All-State band for an impressive four consecutive years.
Ian’s musical journey began with an instrument fitting with his band directors Tony Yarbrough and Sharon Kalisek at the start of his 5th-grade school year. He reminisced on how he felt comfortable with both the trumpet and French horn and almost became a trumpet player, but ultimately chose the French horn because of its versatility and beautiful sound.
Ian began auditioning for the TPSMEA (Texas Private School Music Educators Association) honor band in 7th grade. After being selected, he challenged himself to compete at TMEA the following year where he learned 1st chair in the TMEA Junior High Region Band.
Beginning in 9th grade Ian was eligible to begin auditioning for the TMEA All-State Band. In an audition process that begins with over 70,000 students, Ian was chosen as one of the 1,875 students in Texas who have been selected as an All-State Musician. This is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive and is awarded to only 2.6% of students who initially enter. Even more impressive is that Ian went on to repeat this process and earn a seat in the prestigious band three more times, making him a part of the .06% of band students in the state of Texas to earn that honor.
Ian will perform in San Antonio at the Texas Music Educator’s Conference in February. Congratulations, Ian!
