VARSITY FOOTBALL
9/22 at. Oakridge* • 43-23 W

They say, “life is simple, but we insist on making it complicated”; one could say the same for football. The Cooper Dragons finally let it be simple Friday night as they defeated the Oakridge Owls 43-23.

The offensive explosion the Dragons had waited for all year finally came as freshman QB Colson Collins threw for three touchdowns, over 150 yards and Dragon running backs ran for another two.  It was a level of execution that Cooper had looked for all year and finally, they found that glimpse of the championship magic they harnessed so well the past few years.

Junior RB Dean Calhoun was spectacular in his return totaling over 120 yards on the ground on just 13 carries and one touchdown. Senior WR Gus Fienberg was unable to guard pulling in four catches on four targets for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore WR Santi Fernandez Villarreal scored his first varsity receiving touchdown as well, surely the first of many for the talented Dragon wide out. The Dragon defense got the points party started scoring on a strip by sophomore LB Cooper Dupuis and score by junior LB Connaghan Hou on the first offensive series of the game for the Owls. Senior LB Cole Sheppard was his usual self as he made big plays and directed the Dragon defense to the correct spots all night. Junior DT Jose Paez continued to make his presence felt as he was in the Owl backfield early and often; DT Jackson Todd was an unmovable force for the Dragons making the Owls go another way when running the ball.

The Dragons continue to mature and hope they are finding their stride as they go to 2-0 in district play and return to the lair this week as the Hawks of Cistercian fly into town. –Coach Daniel Lewis
