Visual Arts
Visual Arts students create and synthesize artistic techniques to find and express point of view, provide an avenue for advancing new skills, and develop a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
Lower School
Lower School Visual Arts consist of an introduction to basic elements of design and principles of art. Projects, emphasis, level of difficulty, and skill requirements are sequential and developmentally appropriate, and exercises are designed to encourage student creativity, imagination and observation, individual expression, and skill development. Art history, criticism, and aesthetics are integral parts of every lesson. Projects include drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking.
Middle School
Middle School Visual Arts continues to build on the basic skills learned in the Lower School. Emphasis is placed on design elements, art principles, observational skills, creative problem solving, and original thought. Art history, criticism, and aesthetics are integral parts of each lesson. As students advance through middle school, new mediums are introduced including small metals, acid etching, woodworking, welding, digital imaging, animation, and photography.
Upper School
Upper School Visual Arts is designed to give students exposure to more advanced techniques and materials. Emphasis is placed on observational and technical skills, problem solving, personal style, and conceptual thinking. Students select from a wide range of offerings, including drawing, painting, sculpture, welding, warm and fused glass, small metals, casting, mixed media, printmaking, photography, ceramics, 3D animation, and digital imaging.
