Dig Pink Volleyball Games
Supporting the fight against cancer!
October is a special month for those who know and play volleyball. This month is a time dedicated to raising awareness, promoting early detection, and supporting those affected by breast cancer. In alignment with this cause, The John Cooper School volleyball teams participate in Dig Pink, using their platforms to spread awareness and generate funds for breast cancer research and support services through the Side Out Foundation. The Side-Out Foundation is a national nonprofit organization focused on funding research for Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC). This foundation started Dig Pink in 2005 as a way to begin their funding.
Alexandra Schoenherr, Class of 2026, is a member of the varsity volleyball team and is a Dig Pink co-chair for the second year. Additionally, Alexandra has been named a 2024 National Side-Out Ambassador:
"As a member of the Cooper community since Pre-K, Dig Pink has been an annual event that I have attended, and my family has supported. I took on the role as Dig Pink co-chair last season after my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2023. This personal connection has fueled my passion to promote this cause. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to raise awareness for breast cancer by organizing and participating in Dig Pink at Cooper and now as a Side-Out Ambassador. Now more than ever it is important for us to come together in support of this important cause. It is my hope that you all would be willing to support our endeavor and share the news about Metastatic Breast Cancer with those around you. After all, we are stronger together."
Statistics show that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, with this ratio estimated to get worse in the coming years, and less than 2% of funds raised for breast cancer research go toward metastatic breast cancer, or MBR. The John Cooper School Dig Pink campaign aims to improve these statistics and care for individuals diagnosed. In total, Cooper has raised over $180,000 in funds for the Side-Out Foundation, helping 85 individuals receive personalized care for MBR.
Athletes, coaches, and the Cooper community united on October 17th for the Dig Pink volleyball games, wearing pink to show solidarity with survivors and honor those who have lost their battle. Dig Pink not only empowers communities to join the fight against breast cancer but also emphasizes the importance of teamwork, both on the court and in making a difference off the court.
