The John Cooper School's cross country and volleyball teams delivered exceptional performances at the 2024 Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) Championships this past weekend. Cooper student-athletes showcased their hard work, determination, and sportsmanship, making this year’s championship a memorable one.
Cross Country
The Cooper Cross Country teams brought their A-game to the SPC Championships at Norbuck Park in Dallas, with strong finishes from both the girls and boys teams.
The Girls Cross Country Team wrapped up a remarkable season with a 2nd place overall finish. Class of 2025 Seniors Alexis Seymour and Tahira King led the team, finishing 4th and 5th, respectively, in the individual race. Freshman Class of 2028 Raya Al-Aghbar made a significant impact, finishing 10th, while Class of 2027 Lexie FitzSullivan and Class of 2028 Kareena Gill rounded out the team’s scoring with 16th and 20th place finishes.
The Boys Cross Country Team finished 4th overall, just behind a close battle with Country Day. Class of 2025 Senior Walter Day continued his impressive season with a 5th place finish, followed by Class of 2026 Jacob Bailey in 9th. Class of 2026 Isaac Ortega had a strong showing, finishing 20th, with Senior Class of 2025 Chris Trenholme and Class of 2027 Zach Jefferson rounding out the team in 22nd and 26th, respectively.
"I was very proud with both of our programs and the way they competed today," said Coach George Dohner, Head Cross Country Coach. "The Cooper Girls and Boys really fought hard today and laid all out on the course. "
Volleyball
In addition to the cross country teams’ outstanding performances, Cooper’s Volleyball Team also made a significant impact at the SPC Championships, finishing in 3rd place. The team’s hard work throughout the season culminated in a strong showing against some of the best teams in the region. With a mixture of veteran leadership and new talent, the volleyball team displayed excellent teamwork, skill, and resilience on the court.
“We’re incredibly proud of our volleyball team for securing 3rd place at SPC. They played with heart and determination, and their effort was evident throughout the tournament,” said Coach Courtney Hunnicutt, Head Volleyball Coach. “The team has grown tremendously, and we’re excited for what lies ahead next season.”
