Total Solar Eclipse 2024

The Cooper community comes together to experience the solar eclipse!
Today, Monday, April 8th, marks the total solar eclipse the entire nation and Cooper community has been eagerly waiting for! A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, casting a shadow on the Earth that will fully block the sun’s light in some areas. This solar eclipse was visible throughout the Northern American continent stretching from the states of Texas to Maine.

Lower schoolers prepared for this special solar eclipse through the creation of special, custom-designed eyewear to experience this once (or twice) in a lifetime event. According to the Texas Tribune, “The United States in North America won’t see another similar total eclipse until August 23, 2044, according to NASA, and the last total solar eclipse Texas saw was on July 29th, 1878.”

Despite the cloudy and overcast weather, The John Cooper School students, faculty, and staff still convened to witness this event in their very own classrooms. The community observed the dimming of light and the passing of the eclipse through livestreaming. Upper School students had fun in The Glenn Performing Arts Center with trivia that was out of this world while enjoying Starburst, Sun Chips, and Moon Pies! This amazing event brought together The John Cooper School community to not only experience what a solar eclipse looks like in person, but to use it as a learning opportunity to enrich and expand transformational opportunities for our students.
